Full Analysis of MixMag Magazine

Mixmag is a music magazine for people who like music and dance, you can tell by looking at the front cover its audience is aimed for young people around 16-24 as it is very funky. The main image is of a woman posing wearing a short dress, gem headphones round her neck and she has a Chihuahua in her handbag with a record deck placed in the background this could suggest that the magazine is for young, stylish girls who like to go out clubbing. There is a lot of ‘Barbie pink’ text around the image which could suggest that the magazine is mostly aimed at girls. Also, it is like neon pink which could suggest the magazine is aimed at people who like raves. As the background is white, they have made the image stand out from the background as her shadow outlines her; I think this is very effective as most magazines are not bright and colourful so this would stand out on the shelf. The main story on the front cover is on why celebrity DJs must be stopped, the woman’s facial expression shows us she is shocked, this could be that she is showing her reaction to the main story. The layout of the front cover is similar to most magazines that I have analysed, the title, Mixmag at the top is the largest font on the page, the second largest font is the main story that is featured in the magazine. The date and price of the magazine is placed at the bottom right hand corner and the font is very small, showing that it isn’t as important as the others. Also, the producers maybe hoping that people won't look at the price and just buy the magazine anyway. There are only two colours that are used on the front cover which are pink and black. I think it is a good idea to only use two colours as it doesn’t make the page look as busy and messy, also the audience’s attention are focused more on the image rather than the text. Overall, I think the front cover shows its target audience well by the image and colours.

Unlike most magazines, the contents for this magazine were not on the first page, they were on the third, after different types of adverts. The contents page has a picture of the same women and Chihuahua and the decks but in a different position to the image on the front cover. At the top of the page has the title of the magazine, date and contents, this time the background is black and all of the text is white and yellow. He page numbers are yellow and the others are written in white. The page numbers are set out in order, this is quite common in most magazines as it is easier to follow and clear to read. The main image is placed in the centre on the contents page, it stands out as it is very colourful and it also follows the target audience as they look like they are at a party. At the bottom of the page is a section telling you about a free CD that you will get if you buy the magazine, it also states the tracks that are on it. I think this is a very good idea as if the tracks were not on it people would wonder what they will be listening to if they buy the magazine, they may or may not like all the tracks. Overall, I think that this contents page has been laid out well and is very easy to understand as it has pictures and highlights of the key features of the magazine well and where you can find them.

This is a double page spread, this particular feature is the main story in the magazine, it is spread over five pages. The focal point of the page is the title ‘Welcome to Lame Academy’ the reason this is the main attraction as it is the largest font taking up half the page, behind the text is a yellow background which doesn’t really go well as it isn’t the themed colours but it looks effective. It is shaped like the sun so it looks as if the woman being photographed is going on holiday as she is holding a suitcase and wearing sunglasses, also the light is coming from the right hand side and it looks as if the sun is creating it. This whole double page spread seems to be based on a celebrities life, as most celebrities are glamorous and would be holding their little dog beside them and posing with her suitcase as all the paparazzi are interested in her and wanting to take pictures. When it comes to me designing my magazine, I will need to think of clever techniques, such as making the titles standing out and looking different. The layout has an image taking up most of the two pages with a large font at the top right hand corner, under the title is text which tells the audience what the article is about, like in NME and most magazines they have used a larger font to show the start of the article.
